Saguaro, a private nonprofit organization, helps the elderly, low-income and the developmentally disabled, including those afflicted by autism, cerebral palsy and epilepsy, with day programs. They also do outreach for children under 3 with special needs and have an after-school program for junior high school students with special needs. Many of those provided by these and other programs are in need of transportation which STS provides for them.

For 20 years, Saguaro Transportation Service have provided free transportation for medical appointments or seniors with nutrition needs and have consistantly expanded on transportations services they provide to those in need, including a program that was grant funded to provide transportation for job seekers lacking their own vehicles.

One of the most serious problems facing a community is the concerns of providing adequate non-emergency medical transportation. Thousands of citizens in need of medical care and opportunities to access other community resources are in situations where they have no available or affordable transportation options. Many of these individuals are on fixed incomes and have for some reasons fallen through the social safety net.

Even though STS has entered into a collaborative agreements with nearly twenty different social services agencies to provide transportation, there exist numerous individuals who face making the decisions concerning whether or not they go to medical appointments, purchase prescriptions, or pay for transportation necessary to get to appointments.

STS has since 1994 provided transportation to hundreds facing these situations. STS has fortunately been able to assist many of these under or un-served individuals through the assistance to the United Way of Yuma County and currently has Saguaro has a fleet of 38 vehicles including wheelchair-equipped maxivans.

All drivers are certified in CPR, first aid and client intervention training.
